ETEC 545: Book Talk Trailer

Greetings 6th graders!
Let's start with some inspiration. Please check out this Book Talk trailer about a novel we recently finished.

What did you notice?
What elements of the book do you see in here?
Did the theme of the trailer work with the theme of the book?
Were the photos relevant?
What did you think about the summary? Was it enough or did it give away too much?
What would you change?
Discuss your thoughts in the comments below.

Now it's time to think of your own Book Talk. What decisions will you make? What information MUST be in a good book talk?

Teacher Rationale
I chose this video as an example for my students for an upcoming project. They will be using iMovie trailers to create a Book Talk on a student chosen book. I think it's important for students to see models and analyze them before trying them on their own. Students will then be able to rationalize their decisions and communicate the main themes of their books through the use of words and images. They will also have to consider sound. Starting with the iMovie trailers gives students a boost since it is a basic template that is very simple to edit. They learn how to manipulate the iPad but can focus on the content. Trailers look professional and students are excited to see their work put together. Each trailer has a predetermined time limit so it will be easy to share over Apple TV with the class in one class period. It's a fun and engaging project that has the bonus of getting students hooked on their next book. (Hopefully!)
The blog is a simple way to give content and have a discussion before planning their assignment.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!!!

This year I am teaching 6th grade Language Arts and  Ancient Civilizations and 7th grade Language Arts (Read 180).

Our first reading was LAUSD's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). We are getting ready for those iPads! We watched the BrainPop on Online Safety, read some excerpts from the AUP, and discussed some "juicy" scenarios and what we should do. We looked for evidence in the AUP and brainstormed consequences.

We discussed the word "copyright". Today, we will listen to this:

We have a four day weekend coming up! Let's have a great week!
